English Heritage are excited to be recruiting for a newly created Senior Financial Accountant position which will be a crucial role leading a small Financial Accounting team. It will be responsible for the preparation of the annual statutory accounts and for managing the external audit cycle and taking a lead on the Charity's annual tax planning, developing the tax strategy, mitigating risk and maximising recovery. We need a technically strong accountant who has a keen knowledge of the latest developments impacting the Charity's financial accounting and reporting and will take the lead in resolving financial accounting queries.
Key Responsibilities
- Owning the year end process, audit and preparation of the annual statutory accounts for the Charity and trading subsidiary in line with Charities SORP.
- Engaging with external auditors and internal auditors and leading on the implementation of audit recommendations as appropriate.
- Leading the Charity's annual tax planning work, supporting the Finance Director in developing the tax strategy and resolving tax queries internally
- Keeping abreast of developments impacting financial accounting and reporting and leading in the implementation of changes as appropriate. Leading in the resolution of financial accounting queries.
- Reporting to the Financial Controller and managing a small Financial Accounting team.
- Developing cashflow forecasting and managing cash balances in line with the Investment Policy.
- Owning, developing and managing the processes for monitoring and releasing restricted reserves.
- Leading process review and improvements as appropriate.
Person Specification
- A fully qualified chartered accountant
- Sound understanding of tax matters ideally within a non-profit setting (VAT, including partial exemption, Corporation Tax, option to tax, capital good scheme etc.)
- Experience of working in, or audited, a financial control function in a complex organisation
- Strong understanding and experience of statutory accounting experience
- Previous experience in managing or supervising a team
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Strong technical skills and advanced level Excel capabilities
